County shading summarizes reported Waffle House operating status, not weather severity. Unshaded counties have no mapped locations or unavailable boundaries. Click a county for counts and data freshness. County totals include all tracked locations, regardless of search filters. NWS warnings are a separate optional overlay. Temporary closure causes are not reported; call ahead.
Restaurant status comes from the Waffle House locator. County shading summarizes restaurant status. Optional weather outlines come from NWS alerts. A temporary closure is not confirmation of storm damage. Call ahead before traveling.

Emergency managers have long used an informal rule of thumb: Waffle House is built to stay open through nearly anything, so when a location goes to a limited menu or shuts its doors, conditions in that area are probably bad. FEMA's former administrator Craig Fugate popularized the idea, and it has stuck around as a quirky gut-check on how hard a storm really hit.
Full menu, normal hours. Little to no storm impact in the area.
Limited menu or scattered closures — power or supplies may be strained.
Locations closed. Severe conditions; this rarely happens and signals a serious event.
We combine two signals: the restaurants' own open/closed status (the true index) and live National Weather Service alerts (shaded counties) so you can see both what the weather is doing and whether the waffles are still flowing.
This is an unofficial, informal tracker and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Waffle House, Inc., FEMA, or the National Weather Service. For emergencies follow official guidance from your local emergency management agency and weather.gov.
